Victory Speech on Primary Election Night

Speech given at Monroe County Democratic Headquarters, May 8, 2007

Thank you very much, Monroe County Democrats. I’m incredibly grateful for the trust that the Democratic voters of District 5 have placed in me by choosing me as their candidate for the fall election. I am honored, and I am humbled.

I would like to thank Jack and Craig, who both were excellent candidates and worked very hard pounding the pavement throughout the district. Craig’s common-sense suggestions like building more bus shelters and installing signs to point to parking downtown are right on target. Jack’s emphasis on alternative transportation and the vitality of our core neighborhoods are also ideas I support 100%. Thank you Craig, Jack, for being such worthy adversaries and for running a clean campaign. I look forward to talking with each of you to incorporate your ideas into our common Democratic platform for District 5.

So many wonderful people were involved in making the Piedmont for Council campaign a success. I would like to thank the Monroe County Democratic Party for the help they provided me and the other candidates during the campaign. I would like to thank my fabulous campaign team: Jane Bradley, Cathi Crabtree, Lorraine Farrell, David Keppel, Larry Meehan, Carole Scifres, David Smith, and Julie Thomas. I would like to thank my parents for their constant support: Fred and Beate Piedmont.

I would like to thank the Democratic Women’s Caucus, without which this victory would not have been possible. The dedication, hard work, and just plain smarts of the members of the DWC are truly amazing. In particular, I’d like to thank DWC chair Regina Moore and vice-chair Susan Sandberg. What great role models for me and for all Democratic women in Monroe County. I’m proud to be a member of the DWC, and I will continue to work toward our common goal of getting more progressive, democratic women involved in local politics.

Fellow Democrats, I know there’s work to be done between now and November 6. District 5 has been in Republican hands for 12 years, and the voting profile is about half Republican. This summer and into the fall, I pledge to do what it takes to win the District 5 seat for the Democratic party. I will walk door to door, meet with community leaders, learn more about City Council business, and seek to find common ground with District 5 voters from all walks of life. With your help, we can and will take District 5 in November. Thank you.
